The 2nd annual Akumal Comedy Festival was an overwhelming success, with over a dozen professional comedians performing 10 shows over 4 days in various venues in Akumal, Puerto Aventuras and Playa del Carmen. Event-goers also enjoyed the comedic musical stylings of Courtney McClean and the Dirty Curls and an exciting live performance from Akumal’s own Natalie and the Foxes. On Sunday, helping to wrap up the festival, whimsical artwork from renowned courtroom artists, Aggie Kenny and Elizabeth Williams, documenting the Comedy Festival and scenes from Akumal was displayed at an art vernissage hosted by La Lunita restaurant. Over the course of the festival, in total, over $4000 USD was raised to help the Otoch Paal Montessori School to build much needed new classrooms.
In addition to the funds raised, invaluable positive media attention was generated for the Riviera Maya, village of Akumal and the Otoch Paal Montessori School with notices and articles appearing in USA Today, the Riviera Maya Tourist Board website, Mayan Explore, Yucatan Today, The Akumalian, Pelican Press, Sac Be and many other company blogs and newsletters. 24/7 Comedy was also broadcasting live from Akumal twice per hour throughout the week to 35 radio stations across the Unites States including Iheartradio.
Special thanks go out to all the performers who traveled to the Riviera Maya to take part in this ambitious comedy event. This year’s talented included comedians Jimmy Shubert, Alysia Wood, Glenn Wool, Gus Lynch, John Beuhler, Adam Quesnell, John Conroy, Al Klemick, Jeff Pfoser, Andrew Short, Reid Faylor, Craig Norton and Courtney McCLean & The Dirty Curls plus Improv from Jim Robinson and Kim Schultz and Co.
