Quintana Roo’s best amateur equestrians and invited guests from the neighboring state of Yucatan brought went head to head in the arena last weekend at the 5th Annual Torneo Ecuestre Mundo Maya held at the facilities of the Club Hipico Playa del Carmen. Jumpers from the region’s finest equestrian clubs left nothing on the “pista” in this exciting two-day meet that drew the region’s best riders representing clubs from Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Puerto Aventuras and Merida. The invitational tournament is integrated into the Quintana Roo State Show Jumping Championship season and is recognized by the Mexican Equestrian Federation (FEM). This was the 2nd of 8 qualifying meets that will be held across the state leading up to the National Championships held annually at the Club Hipico Balvanera in the state of Queretaro.
Municipal President Rafael Castro Castro was on hand to inaugurate the event and wish the riders well as they vied for top spots on the leaderboard. Throughout the weekend, riders of all ability levels, beginner to advanced, gave it their all, thrilling local riding enthusiasts and horse-lovers who have come to look forward to this exciting event. At the end of the two-day tournament, the riders with the most points earned in each category were awarded cash and prizes provided by Hotel Rosa del Viento in Tulum, Grupo Vidanta, Señor Frog’s Playa del Carmen, Equimed Cancun and LaCrin Equine Products.
When the accumulated points for the two-day competition were tallied, Alejandro Tinoco (Sunspot) and Juan Antonio Tinoco (Shakira) earned the top spots in 60cm and 75cm respectively representing Cancun’s Hacienda Andalucia. Catherine Kinnon (Atos), riding for Hipico Playa del Carmen triumphed taking first place over the 90cm fences. Jimena Perez (Gitana) representing Hipico Los Corceles in Puerto Aventuras took 1st place in the category of 1 mt.
Hipico Playa del Carmen, under the leadership of trainer Francisco Magallon, has been training Riviera Maya riders for over a decade, sending many students all the way to the National Championships at Balvanera. The equestrian facility also hosts and supports the Equine Therapy program for the Centro de Atencíon Integral de Playa del Carmen A.C.
