Every year, the children in the Akumal Pueblo look forward to the wonderful summer enrichment program at Hekab Be Library! This year, a wonderful music teacher will be bringing music education to the local children and even helping them to develop their own choir! They will be learning patriotic Mexican songs as well as traditional Mayan folk songs which they will prepare this the summer and perform during the upcoming Mexican Independence Day celebrations in September.
Music is a universal language and recent scientific research shows a link between children’s training in music and the development of other mental abilities. Children in the Akumal public schools do not receive any music instruction so this is an incredible opportunity for the children who are able to participate.
The cost to sponsor each child for this wonderful summer enrichment program is just $45 usd. This pays for staff, sheet music, clean water, electricity, bathroom supplies, healthy snacks and other classroom materials. Last year, support from generous donors provided summer scholarships for 70 children (full or part-time)! This year, Hekab Be Library hopes to provide even more children with the gift of music!
In addition to music instruction, the children will participate in activities which will solidify and increase reading and math skills, have fun through exercise and games, and join their families in expanding and harvesting their garden beds at the library.
The summer program is 4 weeks long and runs from mid-July to mid-August. Just $45 usd is all it takes to make the summer really great for one local child but donations of any amount are welcomed and appreciated. Please consider pledging your support for one or more children and encourage your friends, neighbors and local Akumal businesses to support Hekab Be as well!!
