Dates Set for 2nd Annual Akumal Comedy Festival

Akumal Comedy Festival

Stand Up! Records is proud to present The Second Annual Akumal Comedy Festival. The festival will take place April 11-13. This completely free comedy festival will feature over a dozen professional comedians from the United States and Canada performing seven shows in four distinct venues in Akumal over three days. The Festival is the brain child of Grammy Award winning president and founder of Stand Up! Records Dan Schlissel and comedian/actor Gus Lynch (Saving Silverman, North Country, I Spy), who seek to showcase the finest professional and fastest rising stars in stand up comedy, as well as the people, restaurants, and businesses of Akumal.  This festival will be fundraising to build new classrooms for the Otoch Paal Montessori School.

This year’s Festival Headliners Include:

Jimmy Shubert  - comedian and actor. Has 3 albums with Stand Up! Records. Has performed on Comedy Central since 2007 and performs at Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal.

Akumal Comedy FestivalDon’t miss three days of free comedy shows at venues all over Akumal including La Buena Vida, Lol Ha Snack Bar, The Grateful Dead Stage and closing ceremonies at the Festival Square. All shows are free and open to the public, with festival volunteers on hand to take donations.

All festival proceeds will go to support Akumal’s Otoch Paal Montessori School. According to Mexico’s Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP), in order for the elementary-aged children to be able to continue to receive an education that is formally recognized, the school must complete the “basic structure” of two additional classrooms. Unfortunately, due to a lack of financial resources, the school has not been able to complete the construction of the additional classrooms required to keep the primary school open. While the pre-school program, Casa de los Niños, continues to operate, in November 2012, Taller (tie-yer) Primary School at Otoch Paal was closed. School supporters, teachers and parents hope to have building completed as soon as possible so that the primary school may open again for the 2013-2014 school year. Funds from this event will help to complete this goal.
