Laughs in Tulum: Opening Night of the 2015 Akumal Comedy Festival

The 2015 edition of the popular Akumal Comedy Festival began last night with a bang! Hosted at the beautiful Mateo’s Mexican Grill on the main beach road in Tulum, the opening night for this annual event was filled with laughter and smiles, despite the heat.

Mateo's Mexican Grill Tulum

A few of us enjoyed an outdoor dinner at Mateo’s around sunset (I recommend the fish tacos!) before heading to the restaurant’s back bar area for the opening comedy show at 8 pm “Mexican time”.

It was standing room only, with every chair filled, a small crowd by the bar and even more audience members peering down from the balconies above. Somehow, the waiters miraculously weaved their way through the crowds to make sure everyone could cool off with a drink on this humid April night.

Akumal Comedy FestivalThe night kicked off with some raunchy but hilarious comments from MC Chad Daniels, followed by sets from comedians Mike Stanley, Colleen Doyle Justice, Joe Staats, Chris Maddock and headliner Danny Lobell. The cost at the door was $150 pesos, all of which is donated directly to the Mexican Red Cross. You can read more about how the Akumal Comedy Festival has helped the local Red Cross in this BuyPlaya.com article.

Tonight’s show will be held at Wah Wah Beach Bar in Playa del Carmen at 7:30 pm, and I can’t wait to see what the second night has in store! Hopefully the ocean breeze from the beach will cool things down, and the bartenders will keep the drinks flowing. Craig Norton is hosting, and Chad Daniels (the MC from opening night) will be headlining. The cost is a $200 peso charity donation to the Red Cross at the door.

Wah Wah Akumal Comedy FestivalThe 2015 Akumal Comedy Festival will continue throughout the rest of the week, with Spanish and English comedy shows in Playa del Carmen, Tulum and of course Akumal. Check out the Akumal Comedy Festival website for the complete itinerary!

I hope to see you tonight at Wah Wah’s in Playa del Carmen.
