New International Artist Residency Program Coming to Akumal!

What follows is a message from Kim Schultz, an Akumal part-timer and ONDARTE artist.

As you all probably know, our beloved Ondarte Artist Residency (hosted by Maribel and Que Onda) has closed.  Well, I am writing to tell you of an opportunity to open a new residency and keep visiting international art alive in Akumal.

I have been invited by Paul Sanchez-Navarro to utilize the CEA dorms during turtle off-season to bring international artists back into the community.  The result of which is a NEW artist residency coming to Akumal next year for 10 weeks: AKUMAL INTERNATIONAL ARTIST RESIDENCY!

Our goal is to open next February with 5 international artists of different disciplines offering weekly works-in-progress salons, monthly exhibitions, and community classes, BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!

While this residency will eventually be self-sustaining, there are several start-up costs we need your help with right now, as well as an opportunity for offering artist scholarships.  (Please see the attached document for more details and a list of in-kind donations also needed.)  The dollar amount we are requesting is not high, but we are asking for the community to get involved to make this a reality, and in return, Akumal gets rewarded with interesting artistic events and classes, as well as increased traffic to our little town, as it becomes known as the “art town” on the Mexican Caribbean.  Since this residency will not be year-round, it allows us to offer a more intensive and educational experience for the community and tourists.

Bart and Jen have generously offered to host a cocktail party/fundraiser/informational meeting Friday, September 27th, 6 – 8pm at Turtle Bay Bakery.  We hope you can attend, but we also realize many of you are not in town right now.  So please consider looking at our needs and seeing if you can contribute in any way to make this opportunity for Akumal a reality.

I would love to hear from you with any questions/concerns/donations/ideas.  Please email me at kimschultz1@gmail.com or call me at (984) 138-7772 in Akumal.

We hope to see you this Friday for the community meeting and fundraiser at Turtle Bay Bakery, or hear from you before then.

Please RSVP if you can attend on Friday evening, September 27th, 6 – 8pm. Gracias!
