Last week, nearly 80 employees, executive leaders, dealers and suppliers from the Canadian home and garden supply giant RONA travelled to the Riviera Maya to participate in a community service effort here in Akumal. Our own Hekab Be Biblioteca was chosen to receive a facelift and refurbishment courtesy of these hardworking volunteers. Armed with cleaning supplies, hand tools and paintbrushes, this hardworking crew gave the whole facility a once-over, cleaning classrooms, rebuilding and painting bookshelves, tables and chairs, installing security bars and a new bathroom door, painting murals and even clearing space for a packed-dirt basketball court with a proper metal hoop and backboard.
So, how did a multi-billion dollar corporation find out about the needs of small community library tucked away in the Mexican Caribbean? The library project was actually suggested by a representative from RONA’s travel agency. They researched charitable initiatives in the region, saw pictures of the library and felt that the current needs of Hekab Be were in line with the company’s social, economic and environmental concerns as well as a good fit for the interests and skills of this group of volunteers.
RONA was pleased to be able to offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience to their dealers and suppliers and interest in the project was much higher than anticipated. This team-building activity was planned to coincide with RONA’s dealers’ “Getaway Week” in Mexico as an opportunity to give back to the community. All expenses for the library renovation were covered by RONA and all materials were purchased locally. The volunteers were excited to be able to make improvements to the Hekab Be library facilities and offer a better environment to the children and their parents who visit the library. The group also left a slew of books, school supplies, balls, hula hoops and other fun toys for the local children to enjoy while they are at the library.
