If you planning an extended stay in the Akumal area or just coming for a relaxing week on the beach, there is no reason to leave your healthy lifestyle and fitness routine behind. Although you may be tempted to live on coconut shrimp and margaritas, much of Akumal’s cuisine, with its focus on simply prepared fresh seafood, tropical fruits and vegetables, makes it easy to keep a health-conscious diet intact. Whether you choose to dine at Lol Ha, Turtle Bay Bakery, La Lunita, La Buena Vida or any of the other wonderful restaurants that Akumal has to offer, you are certain to find dishes that are as healthful as they are delicious.
But what about your options for staying fit in Akumal? There is no argument that a swim and a nice long walk on the beach is good for the body and soul. I can think of no better place for this than within the protected bays that stretch from Akumal south to Tulum. If you are looking for something a little more structured, we have some suggestions for staying fit in Akumal.

Let’s say you want to take your workout in another direction. Maybe yoga isn’t for you or you want something a little more intense. Half an hour north, in Playa del Carmen, the options for fitness and working out are many and varied. There are dozens of well equipped gyms, as well as studios for Pilates and Cross Fit, all offering personal training services for your unique fitness plan. While well-equipped and well-staffed, the gym options in Playa del Carmen are not exactly what anyone would consider “convenient” if you live in Akumal or Tulum. Now, Riviera Maya workout buffs have a great option located right here in their own backyard….and what a beautiful backyard it is.
Just south of the village of Akumal is the spectacular residential resort community Bahia Principe. Elegantly integrated into the jungle, the TAO Wellness Center has a gym with a full array of state of the art equipment for both strength and cardio training, ample free weights, a lap pool and a purifying temezcal. Use of the gym is free for TAO residents and their guests but anyone may use the facilities with a Day Pass which costs $10 USD or a Monthly Membership for $80 USD.
Operating within the TAO Wellness Center is fitness consultant Chris Walker, a professional personal trainer who also offers health assessment, weight loss strategies, nutritional planning and lifestyle coaching for his clients who want to live the healthiest life possible. Chris is currently running a fitness “bootcamp” which is a great way to jumpstart your workout regime. There are three sessions per week and anyone is welcome to join regardless of age or fitness level. Gym fees are waved for participants so you are only paying for the bootcamp itself. A comprehensive personalized Health Assessment and the 1st class is FREE so you can check it out and see if this is the right workout for you!
