Now the entire country of Mexico has recognized this destination’s inherent charm, and in late September, Tulum was named one of the country’s famous Magic Towns (“Pueblos Magicos” in Spanish). The Magic Town program was created by SECTUR (Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism) in 2001 in order to promote towns across the country that incorporate culture and history into their everyday life, making them memorable places for tourists to visit.

Tulum’s new status as a Magic Town aims to diversify the kinds of tourists who visit this one-of-a-kind location. With about 1.4 million annual visitors to its famed Mayan ruins and increasing popularity as a sun and sand destination with an eco lifestyle, Tulum now hopes to draw in tourists searching for culture as well as the town’s local charm and essence. Tulum’s Tourism Development Program plans to diversify its attractions as a result, with three important projects lined up that include a museum, a tourist stop and a beach club. There are also rumors of a bike route in the massive jungle area between the ruins of Tulum and Coba.

The first location in the state of Quintana Roo to be named a Magic Town was Bacalar, home to the Lake of Seven Colors, near the state’s southern border. In September 2015, Tulum received the recognition in addition to the small island of Isla Mujeres, set just off the coast of Cancun. At the moment, Quintana Roo is also trying to get Magic Town status for the island of Holbox and the small town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, located in the heart of the state’s Mayan Zone.
